Excerpts from a decade of FIN Surveys:
• End of 1990: 28% of FIN Survey participants report second half sales were higher than first half; 22% reported higher profits.
• End of 1991: A 53% majority report higher sales in the second half of 1991 vs. the same period of 1990.
• End of 1992: The biggest problems for manufacturers were: Collections, lack of skilled labor, low sales volume and price competition. For Distributors: Collections, low sales volume, delivery from vendors, price discounting and cash flow.
• End of 1993: The industry is anticipating a strong 1994 with just over half predicting sales and profit increases.
• End of 1994: More than 85% of companies participating in the FIN Survey reported sales were up.
• End of 1995: Sales and profits were up, but “Optimism for profitability in 1996 is not pronounced, with only about half the respondents feeling 1996 will post a profit gain over 1995.”
• End of 1996: A higher percentage of distributors reported “strong” sales increases than manufacturers.
• End of 1997: Eight of 10 fastener companies in the FIN Survey reported 1997 sales were above 1996.
• End of 1998: “Though 60% say 1998 sales were above 1997 levels, the overall FIN Company Performance Index is down to 6.9 from 7.8 last year and 7.3 at the end of 1996.”
• End of 1999: “A majority report higher sales and profits in 1999 vs. 1998, and expect this to continue in 2000.”
