The European Commission has published a 10-page provisional list of imported U.S. products, from peanut butter and orange juice to steel fasteners, that Europe is threatening to apply 25% import duties unless the EU is exempted from steel and aluminum duties imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Fastener + Fixing Magazine reports.
The tariffs, which go into effect March 23, do not appear to directly affect fasteners and other finished steel products. Currently the EU has no antidumping measures on fastener imports. In February 2016 the EU repealed antidumping duties of up to 74.1% on carbon steel fasteners originating in People’s Republic of China after four consecutive EU ‘defeats’ at the WTO Dispute Settlement Body, according to Fastener + Fixing editor Phil Matten.
The review was initiated after Canimex Inc., an importer, filed an exclusion request "on the basis that the domestic fastener industry in Canada does not produce shoulder bolts, and therefore would not be injured by imports of shoulder bolts from other countries."
