Most aerospace, automotive and industrial fastener companies tracked by the FIN Fastener Stock Index posted stock gains during the first three months of 2019.
After two consecutive years of double-digit growth, the FIN Fastener Stock Index contracted in 2018, hampered by volatility that dominated the markets, making 2018 the worst year for stocks in a decade.
The FIN Fastener Stock Index bounced back in the third quarter of 2018, rising 9.2% after declining 0.4% in the previous quarter.
Q1 was “a period when investors experienced a dizzying series of record highs, followed by a dramatic collapse and the return of long-dormant volatility,” according to MarketWatch.
During 2017, aerospace led the way, with aerospace fastener supplier KLX - the former B/E Aerospace fastener division - achieving a 51% increase in share price, driven by sales to commercial aerospace manufacturing customers.
The FIN Fastener Stock Index regained momentum in the third first half of 2017, increasing 2.3% during the period.
“Strong automotive system shipments supporting new customer platforms and volume growth within general industrial markets more than offset declines within electronics.”
“Organic revenue increased 2.6% while the 2016 acquisition of Engineered Fasteners & Components (EF&C) added 3.5% to revenue,” the company stated.
The FINdex stall occurred primarily during the second quarter of 2017, when fastener stocks lost a collective 5.6% of value, compared to a 3% gain by an index of related industrial stocks.
Fastener stocks also posted impressive gains during the year, with the FIN Fastener Stock Index growing 20%.
After posting a 20% increase in 2016, the FIN Fastener Stock Index rose only 9.1% in the opening quarter of 2017, compared to an 5.1% gain by an index of related industrial stocks during the period.
