Fastenal Co. capped a turnaround year of fastener sales growth with a double-digit performance in the fourth quarter of 2017. But while fastener sales grew, the company’s gross margin on fasteners was hurt by inflation.

After months of decline, Fastenal Co. fastener sales are achieving double-digit growth in 2017.
Overall sales at Fastenal rose 15.4% to $365.5 million in November, with daily sales up 15.4% to $17.4 million.
Fastenal sales in the U.S. increased 13%, while total sales in North America climbed 13.5% during October.
Double-digit sales growth of its fastener products driven by acquisition of Masco as well as increased industrial demand.
The latest figures continue the company’s fastener success that began in February, when Fastenal said fastener sales improved 1.5% - marking the company’s first uptick in fastener sales since the third quarter of 2015.
“The second quarter of 2017 felt more like Fastenal,” stated CEO Dan Florness. “We have grown well over the last year, but market headwinds have masked this growth.”
Sales to manufacturing customers rose 14.2% in July, while sales to non-residential construction customers increased 6.6%.
Quarterly results were improved by a 1.5% gain in fastener sales in February, marking the company’s first uptick in fastener sales since the third quarter of 2015.
Founded in 1928, Michigan-based Mansco generated approximately $50 million of revenue in 2016.

Daily sales growth of the fastener product line peaked at over 10% in the second half of 2014. The rate of growth decelerated in the first quarter of 2015, began contracting in the third quarter of 2015, and continued to contract throughout 2016.
Atlas was ranked the top yearly performer among 35 eligible peer suppliers in the “Direct Ship” class.

For Fastenal's fastener product line, the opening months of 2015 started strong before fizzling as the year progressed.
