Swiss/Ukrainian Deal Restoring Rail Fastenings
A new agreement between Switzerland and Ukraine provides 10 million Swiss francs (US$11.2 million) to restore Ukraine’s railway infrastructure. The agreement will supply rail fastenings from 2024 to 2025.
The agreement aims to restore transportation corridors, especially those linking Ukraine with European Union countries, as well as developing ports and the Trans-European Transport Network.
Priority is given to routes that play a key role in international transportation and trade.
Among the planned works are the restoration of sections of main routes, including Kyiv-Zhmerynka-Podvolochysk-Lviv, Zhmerynka-Vapnyarka-Odesa, Kyiv-Hrebinka-Krasnohrad-Lozova, Lviv-Uzhhorod.
The Ukrainian railway company “Ukrzaliznytsia” plans to use the provided rail fastenings to restore 230 kilometers of railway infrastructure, which will increase the speed and capacity of the transportation system.
This is the second agreement between Switzerland and Ukraine involving railway infrastructure.
The first was signed in December 2022 and provided 14 million Swiss francs for the purchase of rail fastenings from Schwihag AG.
“These investments will not only help Ukraine restore its railway network but also contribute to strengthening economic ties and integration into international transportation networks.”
