Rivets Prompt 4-Year Felony Charge

Three Detroit men face multiple felony charges in what prosecutors say was a car theft ring that conned 119 people out of more than $1 million, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The charges include a four-year felony for possession of 400 rosette rivets, which are used to attach VINs to cars.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the men recorded the vehicle identification numbers of cars they wanted to steal, and gave them to an accomplice working at a General Motors car dealership who made keys for them. The defendants allegedly bought junk cars similar to the stolen ones and swapped the VINs.
A GM investigator discovered the scam after noticing that the dealership in question had given out an inordinate number of key codes. A police check discovered the VINs associated with the codes belonged to stolen cars. 2008 FastenerNews.com
