Phony Show Guides Costly to Exhibitors
Phony Show Guides Costly to Exhibitors

Trade show managers regularly battle the phony directories and warn exhibitors to beware of the fine print on solicitations.
The FairGuide of Austria has been soliciting National Industrial Fastener Show and Fastener Fair exhibitors to be in a show directory. The FairGuide promotion talks about a “free listing,” but the fine print could cost an exhibitor more than $4,500.
“The National Industrial Fastener Shows do not approve or condone the solicitation of its exhibitors by this organization,” NIFS general partner Jim Bannister told FastenerNews.com. “We have not given FairGuide permission to solicit and, in fact, would like to publicize that we in no way support or approve of the FairGuide solicitation.”
Bannister noted that NIFS exhibitors are included on its website and in the official show directory and approved publications. “There is absolutely no need for our exhibitors to pay for a FairGuide listing.”
NIFS, Fair Fair Europe and other trade shows frequently warn exhibitors about the solicitations.
While the exhibitor information form looks simple, it is the fine print just above the signature line that commits the signer to three years at US$1,531 per year. “The order is payable and irrevocable unless revoked by registered letter within ten days of submission.”
In addition to the three years the “order is prolonged by a further year, if no cancellation notice is given in writing by registered letter, at least three months before order’s expiry. Sole legal venue and place of performance is Modling, Austria. Applicable law is Austrian. Construct Data Verlag AG reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings at the contractor’s place of business and to transfer rights and obligations related to this order to third parties.
