The upcoming iPhone 6 could include Liquidmetal tamper-resistant screws, according to a new report.
Based on recent patent filings, MacRumors reports that Apple has designed its next generation iPhone with Liquidmetal alloy fasteners to hold together the handset’s intricate components.
Liquidmetal Technologies’ proprietary substance is an amorphous alloy “comprised of Zirconium, Titanium, Copper, Nickel and Beryllium,” according to the company.
“This alloy uniquely combines the strength of forging with intricate molding capabilities superior to MIM (metal injection molding). Twice the strength of titanium, delivers repeatable molded features within ±50µm (±0.002”), and ultra-low shrinkage rate of 0.2%.”
To block unauthorized access to the iPhone 6, Apple has proposed “a fastener having a head portion and a tamper resistant bulk-solidifying amorphous alloy interlock portion, wherein the fastener and the substrate into which the fastener is fitted into are permanently fastened via an interlock formed from the interlock portion during the fastening process.”
Apple engineers may also use Liquidmetal for the Home button mechanism which reportedly has been embedded with the TouchID fingerprint scanner.
In addition, the alloy – known for its high strength and corrosion resistance – may be used as a dependable “substrate for touch sensors” on the iPhone 6.
For years Apple has tried to limit access to the interior of its popular devices by using propriety screws on components.
But if MacRumors’ report is true, it means the tech giant is taking tamper resistance to a new level.
