Improper Use of Bolts Blamed for Fatal Gas Truck Blast in Mexico
Stress-fatigued bolts due to poor maintenance were blamed for a gas truce explosion killing five people and injuring more than 70 at a Mexico City maternity hospital January 29, 2015. Among the dead were two babies and a nurse.
The two bolts ruptured on a gas truck, authorities said. Investigators blamed incorrect size bolts and use of wire and tape for valve installations.
The gas company could face 42.6 million pesos (US$2.85m) in fines plus compensation to families.
The truck driver and two Gas Express Nieto employees were arrested after the blast and the gas company could be heavily fined.
City officials said the investigation could lead to murder, injury and wrongful damage charges against several people involved.
The truck was delivering liquified propane to the hospital kitchen.
A child burned in the explosion was transferred to Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, Texas. ©2015 GlobalFastenerNews.com
