Gowett at STAFDA: Do Business with People You “Know and Trust”

People want to do business with people they know and trust, Bay Tool & Supply co-founder Rod Gowett told attendees of the Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association convention in Phoenix.

Gowett, who started his career in 1981 with Don Newcomb Tool, had little business experience up to that point. But he knew about people through his experience in police work.

“During my initial interview with Don Newcomb, he asked me what industry sales experience I had. I told him I had absolutely zero experience in outside sales. His response was ‘Good, I don’t care for salespeople, but I do want someone who can create & build relationships.'”

That day, Gowett learned what he called “one of the most important lessons I ever learned in my business career.”

“I learned very quickly that the most important thing you can do for your customer is take that request they have from the field, and fill it quickly so they can get on to bigger and more important issues.”
