Following fires in two 2014 911 GT3, Porsche plans to replace the engine in every 911 GT3 that was built for the 2014 model year, LeftLane reports.
In a letter sent to 911 GT3 owners, Porsche said its investigation settled on a defective connecting-rod fastener, “which is prone to loosening and consequently damaged the crankcase in two cars that caught fire in Europe,” writes Justin King of LeftLane.
“In order to avoid this in the future, an optimized screw connection is currently being tested,” the company wrote in the letter, which was posted by Autoweek. “For the final validation of this solution, Porsche AG is currently carrying out extensive tests.”
“At Porsche we are rigorous when implementing an engineering solution, therefore, after the successful testing and validation we will be installing new engines with optimized piston rod screw connections in all 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles,” the letter continues.
“Porsche spokesman Nick Twork said that the company determined there was a problem with the connecting-rod fasteners in the 911 GT3’s 3.8-liter flat-six engine,” Automobile explained. “If those fasteners failed, the connecting rod would separate from the crankshaft, apparently leading to the engine fires documented in Italy and Switzerland. Rather than rebuild or repair them, Porsche decided simply to replace the engines.”
There are 758 of the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3s, including about 400 units in the U.S.
