FIEG: Understanding Your Responsibilities Is Subject at Fastener Quality Conference

Understanding your responsibilities in fastener quality is the focus of a conference session conducted by the Fastener Industry Education Group.
The free session, sponsored by the Industrial Fasteners Institute and the National Fastener Distributors Association, will be at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, in the Jazzman Room at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in conjunction with the National Industrial Fastener Show/West.
“Our mission is simple. We want to educate fastener users and suppliers about the importance of understanding and using fastener standards and how to determine if fasteners you make, buy or sell are conforming to the applicable standards.”
Distributors’ responsibilities are “more than you think” and distributors need to know standards before recommending fasteners.
Advice to distributors includes: “Be careful what you ‘assume.’ A Grade 2 bolt is not the same as an A307 bolt; Buy from reputable suppliers who know what they are selling; Make sure your PO is complete, specific, and clearly spells out your requirements.”
Importers must issue POs “that are complete, detailed, and indicate the applicable standard. Visit and check out your sources. Reviewing a copy of their ISO certificate is not enough; test and document; understand that the law treats the party that passes goods through U.S. Customs as the manufacturer.
Manufacturers should not accept POs that are incomplete, unclear, and/or do not specify the applicable standards, or for parts specifying an unfamiliar standard or the manufacturer doesn’t know the applicable requirements. “Contract review is a critical part of ISO Quality System requirements” for manufacturers.
Exporters must understand the customer’s requirements before processing the order. “Do not accept POs for parts unless you know the standard and are clear on what is required; understand your liabilities.
