FEATURE
The following are highlights from panelists comments at the Southeastern Fastener Association spring meeting in Alabama. The full story is available to subscribers CLICK HERE:
• Mickey Matheny of Northstar suggested that 99% of the import buying job is “knowing which factories to buy from.” But that can be tricky because some production is subcontracted out, he added.
• Pete Carlino of International Fasteners, prepared a list of questions for fastener distributors thinking of importing directly.
• Kent Carter of Elgin Fastener Group “We are seeing reshoring,” Kent Carter Elgin Fastener Group observed. “We’ve had parts production come back.
In addition to a national reshoring mood, the tsunami “woke up our customer base. They realized anything can interrupt the supply chain.”
• Panelist Glenn Goins of Southern Fasteners noted it may only take a company’s top three customers to influence sourcing decisions.
The SEFA session was held in Birmingham, AL and panel moderator John Wolz, editor of GlobalFastenerNews.com, noted that Birmingham Fastener president Brad Tinney said the combined manufacturing and 10 distribution branches was up 20% for the opening quarter of 2012 compared with Q1 2011. ©2012 GlobalFastenerNews.com
