The Southern California fires came so close that one fastener employee”s backyard was burned, but several fastener companies reported the industry didn”t lose warehouses or homes. However, many employees had to evacuate.
Terri O”Barski of Hayes Bolt & Supply reported the San Diego distributor “didn”t close, but there wasn”t much business happening. Everyone was glued to the television or Internet watching the fires.”
“Lots of businesses were closed due to the mammoth evacuations,” O”Barski added.
“The air quality was really awful,” O”Barski said. “It was worse than living in Los Angeles in the sixties.”
Cathy Law of Ababa QA reported the distributorship “managed to stay open with about 10 people working. Many of our employees had to evacuate their homes, but fortunately no one lost theirs.”
In 2003 another fire in Southern California destroyed Mell”s Fastener Museum. This year the rebuilt home of retired fastener distributor Mel Kirsner and his wife, Judy Kirsner, was threatened by the fires but this time survived.
Bisco Industries Inc. announced it is donating $3,723 to the American Red Cross to support fire relief efforts. Bisco employees raised $1,241 and CEO Glen Ceiley and his wife, Bobby Ceiley, doubled the employees” contributions to$2,482. \ 2007 FastenerNews.com
