Major League Soccer team Toronto FC had to make emergency repairs to its new 20,000-seat stadium, BMO Field, because bolts and fasteners have fallen from the new structure during games, the Associated Press reports.
Stadium operator and team owner Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment insists the facility is safe and that inspections and repairs will be fully completed before the next event.
“It is a big concern for us,” MLSE executive vice president Bob Hunter told AP. “In the last two days they have gone through and checked every connection and added additional locking (nuts).”
Fans have been stomping on the metal floors of the stadium and some reports claim that caused material to fall.
Toronto becomes the 13th MLS team and the first outside of the United States when it was founded in May 2006. The facility is scheduled to host the FIFA Under-20 World Cup Championship in July 2007, an event that will garner an audience of more than 600 million worldwide.
MLSE also owns the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. 2007 FastenerNews.com
