Canadian Manufacturer Grows With Nuclear Fasteners

The Niagara Falls Review noted out that while thousands of North Americans are losing manufacturing jobs, Ontario nuclear nuts and bolt manufacturer Niagara Fasteners Inc.
Under the headline, “Hard Times Don’t Hit This Manufacturer,” reporter Ray Spiteri wrote that with “countries around the world taking a closer look at nuclear energy as a reliable source of safe power with virtually no effect on climate change, one of the beneficiaries could be right here in Niagara Falls.”
“Not a lot of people do what we do,” sales manager Dean Zaniol told the Review. “We’re in a good position … unfortunately, not everyone out there can truthfully say that.”
Niagara Fasteners specializes in making nuts and bolts for both nuclear power generation and nuclear medicine. The company has 40 employees and $7 million in annual sales.
Founded in 1973 by Zaniol’s parents, Niagara Fasteners originally made and distributed fasteners to heavy construction and other customers. The company expanded in nuclear fasteners in 1983.
Zaniol said refurbishing Canadian nuclear plants provides consistent work.
“If reactors get built – and it’s not an if, it’s a when, because everyone is talking about it – Bruce Power just announced they want to put a reactor into Nanticoke, they’re talking two reactors at Darlington, the States are talking over 50 reactors. The potential is huge for us,” said Zaniol.
In 2008 Niagara Fasteners expanded its plant to 36,000 sq ft in anticipation of more nuclear production.
Niagara Fasteners is the only certified manufacturer in Canada and Zaniol may seek U.S. certification. “That’s where our competition is, as well as in Italy -it’s very minimal in Ontario and Canada.”
Niagara Fastener also is a stocking distributor of industrial fasteners.
