Amsted Rail Halves Workforce

Jason Sandefur

Amsted Rail intends to cut 363 jobs by February 16 at its steel foundry in Granite City, IL, the Belleville News-Democrat reports. The latest reduction reportedly follows a round of layoffs in November that cut 130 jobs, meaning Amsted will have cut its foundry workforce in half once the layoffs are complete.

The job cuts come weeks after Amsted spent $6 million to buy a rail fastener business from Canada-based AirBoss of America Corp.
The rail fastener business, located in Kansas City, MO, will continue to operate under the trade name AirBoss Railway Products. The railway products are comprised of elastic fastening systems made with steel spring clips, polymer protective pads and polymer insulators. The steel clip and the polymer product manufacture are outsourced.

Chicago-based Amsted Rail has manufacturing facilities in China, France, Germany and the Czech Republic. Web: amstedrail.com 2009 FastenerNews.com
