AFS Confirms Layoffs in Waco

Alcoa Fastening Systems reportedly laid off 20 employees at its Waco, TX, plant that makes railroad and freight truck fasteners.
The move comes weeks after parent company Alcoa announced it would eliminate 13,500 jobs. Alcoa “is looking at staffing on virtually a weekly basis,” AFS Waco human resources manager Steve Mallery told the Tribune-Herald.
The company is taking other cost-cutting measures, including freezing salaries, restricting travel and eliminating discretionary spending.
At its peak, in 1999, the plant, formerly known as Huck International, employed more than 600, a figure that dropped to 450 by 2008 and now stands at 415.
Those leaving the company will receive a severance package that includes a three-month extension of benefits. Web: alcoa.com 2009 FastenerNews.com
