1994 FIN ? Metropolitan Marks Anniversary With History Lesson
October 8, 1994 FIN – At its 31st birthday party on September 19, a panel of fastener veterans gave a history lesson to current members of the Metropolitan Fastener Distributors Association.
Herb Liebman of A.L. Liebman & Son, said that the first industry associations “were an opportunity to grow in the feeling of belonging to an industry and not just, ‘He’s the SOB who cut my price.'”
Ray Zaslav of Brighton-Best termed the changes in the industry as “mind boggling” during his 37 years in the business.
“The conditions of warehouses have gone from cold damp environments to modern facilities with computers tracking inventory and stocking warehouses in various regions throughout the country,” Zaslav said.
“Women are becoming integral members of the industry and the overall educational level has increased,” Zaslav observed.
Eric Cohn, founder of Allied International, recalled that in 1955 the fastener industry had “‘junkies’ – the guys who bought at 2 cents a pound and sold for 50 cents a pound. You can’t get away with that today.”
