Heco Woodscrew Wins Fastener Innovation Prize at International Hardware Fair

A new Heco woodscrew won the Fastener Innovation Prize at the 2010 International Hardware Fair in Cologne (Köln), Germany.
Schramberg, Germany-based Heco Schrauben GmbH & Co KG took first prize in the Fair’s Fastening Technology Innovation Forum.
A jury of media and industry experts selected the newly launched Heco Unix screw – a full thread woodscrew that, through a reduction in thread pitch from tip to head, is designed to ensure tighter contact between two wood elements.
Unlike a partial thread screw normally used to ensure this clamping action, the Heco Unix screw maintains continued thread engagement in both pieces of wood for the duration of the joint.
The screw, which includes the characteristic Heco saw-tooth profile on its lead threads, also features patented milling recesses under the head.
In contrast to the more common raised milling ribs this design allows the countersunk head to sit tightly when used in a hinge or metal fitting while still aiding efficient countersinking and obviating splitting when used straight into wood. web: heco-schrauben.de
Second prize went to Sherpa for its Verbinder XL dovetailing cast aluminum connectors for structural lumber applications.
Third prize was awarded to the Hammerhead – a lithium ion powered hand-held auto hammer, introduced to Europe by UK-based Chervon Europe Limited.
Exhibitor Numbers Decline
Fastener content in Cologne Hardware Fair declines markedly, Fastener + Fixing editor Phil Matten reported.
The number of exhibiting companies at the four-day show in Cologne (Köln), Germany fell by 20% from 3,360 in 2008 to 2,692 – from 52 countries.
As a result the fair compressed to six of Koelnmesse’s 11 available halls.
German exhibitors fell by a sharp 35% from 629 to 413.
The Hardware Fair’s longstanding strength in Tools is now rapidly approaching virtual dominance, with over 2,000 exhibitors in the power and hand tool categories, Matten reported.
Asian exhibitors accounted for more than half of the total led by an 884 strong contingent from China and 410 exhibitors from Taiwan.
Extending previous Koelnmesse practice Asian exhibitors were limited to Halls 1 to 3, with fastener related exhibitors mainly in Hall 3.
Preliminary 2010 attendance figures have not yet been released by Kolnmesse. In 2008 70,000 visitors attended from 129 countries.
European fastener exhibitors were concentrated in one level of Hall 5. Koelnmesse categorises exhibitors as “ironmongery and fastening technology” reporting a total of 498 exhibitors. Hall 5.2 contained around 126 exhibitors of which around half would normally be considered industrial fastener or construction fixings specialists.
