City Buys Fastener Warehouse for a New Jail

Marion County Jail
September 26, 1996 FIN – The City of Indianapolis, Indiana, purchased two downtown Service Supply Co. Inc. warehouses for a new 670-bed city/county jail and the distributor is taking the opportunity to consolidate five existing buildings under one roof.
Mel Seitz Jr., director of corporate relations for Service Supply, said the city approached the company early this year because the onetime Cole Motor Car manufacturing plant is just seven blocks from the courthouse and has ideal ceiling height and span of columns for prefab jails. It also is bordered by a railroad track and interstate highway, leaving few neighbors to complain about a jail.
Indianapolis-based Service Supply, founded in 1948, hadn’t been planning a move but started looking and found a site suitable for its regional distribution center.
At a site in the Park 100 area of northwest Indianapolis a building was already planned, but Service Supply was able to customize it with extra-heavy floors and higher roof to accommodate a new 28-foot rack.
The rack was up before the building was complete, Seitz said.
The deal closed on September 13, 1996, and Service Supply moved its hex cap warehouse over the weekend.
The rest of the move, estimated to take over 1,000 trailer loads, will consolidate the four downtown stocking centers to 147,000 sq. ft. of space in the new center at 4935 W. 86th St.
The new warehouse, designed by Service Supply’s logistics team, will accommodate 308,000-quarter kegs of material in the 28-foot racking system along with 55,000 packaged SKUs in its multitiered mezzanine.
The move is expected to be complete by the end of the year, and the city/county jail is scheduled to open in August 1997.
