FASTENER HISTORY

November 19, 1979 FIN – A number of computer companies have been active developing systems that can be used by fastener companies, but how about a fastener company that has developed a software system for use in computers?

This turnaround play has been accomplished by Missouri Threaded Products Inc., which recently began to market its computer software packages for the fastener distributor who is considering, or has already purchased an IBM System 34.
Marc Boguslaw, president of the St. Louis-based company, told FIN that the package he has developed includes order entry, detailed inventory analysis, sales analysis, general ledger, payables, receivables and payroll. The system operates in a completely on-line and interactive environment and complete operator training and installation can take as few as four months.

Boguslaw said he began working on the idea two years ago when Missouri Threaded installed System 34.
An intensive development program was then undertaken with third party system analysts and programmers. After the software was designed and tested he found that implementation took only a few months and with little or no paralleling – or running the old system along with the new to hedge your bet on the new program.

Boguslaw expects the economic benefits to be realized in the first month of operation. A few examples he gave FIN include that order entry was increased by 60%, that detailed sales analysis has enabled the monitoring of existing territories on a daily basis and has afforded the opportunity to open up territories on an intelligent basis.
• Inventory levels now remain constant while sales have greatly expanded and collections improved almost overnight as the computer now checks the credit of all orders as they are keyed into the system.
• Overhead and budgets are now monitored on a current basis and are compared to previous periods as standard procedure.
• Cash requirements are now known weeks and months in advance and checks are automatically written as required.
• Stock status reports and purchasing reports have enabled order turnaround time to be cut in half.

Boguslaw set up a separate group – A&M Equipment Co. (named from his father Ashley and Marc’s first names) – to market the system. A couple fastener distributors have already installed the program and he’s working on new installations now.
