September 27, 1984 FIN – Nevada Bolt & Manufacturing Co., Las Vegas, Nevada, has come to the aid of a lady in distress.
We’re referring to a 98-year-old grande dame, The Statue of Liberty, which will be celebrating its 100th birthday in 1986 and is now undergoing some sprucing up for the centennial. Nevada has provided the fasteners for one of the biggest “face lifts” in history and these fasteners are being used for restoration work in the interior of the statue. All the nuts and bolts are metric sizes hot forged out of ferralium 255 bar stock. Edward J. Cebulko, vice president and general manager of Nevada Bolt, told FIN that delivery and quality were critical and he’s happy to report that both were achieved by his company. Corrosion has been a major problem with the statue and the interior is being strengthened with modern alloys.
Stainless steel supports are being installed beneath the structure. The outer skin of the statue consisting of 300 copper plates, is being cleaned and repaired in time for Independence Day ceremonies in 1986. Nevada Bolt carries over 100 grades of material in finished and bar form and has the capabilities to forge .18 to 2″ diameter in hex, square, flat and socket cap screw and nut products.
