Big Dig Settlement Talks Stall
Jason Sandefur
Negotiations have reportedly broken down as lawyers for the family of the woman killed in the Big Dig collapse and the companies involved in the tunnel”s construction try to reach a settlement.
The Boston Globe reported that talks began quietly in the weeks before the NTSB released its findings, which distributed blame among many of the firms who participated in the project.
While early media reports claimed damages might approach $75 million, the family”s attorneys suggest the family could be awarded several hundred million dollars if the case is successfully argued before a jury.
The first depositions in the case are scheduled for late July.
Separately, state and federal officials are reportedly demanding that project manager Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff pay up to $1 billion to settle claims for inadequate work on the project in exchange for immunity from criminal charges in the case.\ 2007 FastenerNews.com
