Big Dig Faces Further Joint Problems

Jason Sandefur

Big Dig inspections found that more than 3,300 steel brackets in Boston’s highway tunnel system must be replaced with a five-bolt design for greater strength, the Boston Globe reports. The current four-bolt brackets reportedly do not meet the project’s safety standard for how much weight they must be able to support.
The latest repairs are likely to keep portions of the tunnel system closed through the Labor Day weekend, according to the Globe.
The new problems come as work crews are fixing several thousand epoxy fastener connections that investigators think may have caused three-ton concrete ceiling panels to fall, crushing a motorist to death in July. Both state and federal agencies are conducting investigations into the incident.
Evidence released to the public indicates the joint failures were most likely caused by faulty application. 2006 FastenerNews.com
