Japan Power Fastening Co. is looking to make inroads in building markets with the unveiling of a flexible screw for wood frame construction, Asia Pulse reports. The screw bends like a nail, making it more likely to adjust during earthquakes and similar impacts.
Japan Power Fastening claims the new screws give lumber-based structures the same strength even when 30% fewer screws are used, reducing labor and material costs for builders.
To create the screw the company re-evaluated the steel alloys and adjusted the duration and temperatures of heat treatments, according to Asia Pulse. This process makes the screw weaker than regular versions but also more flexible.
Japan Power Fastening plans to unveil the screw to homebuilders and engineering firms this month at up to twice the cost of conventional screws. The company anticipates sales of 100 million yen (US$868,042) in the first twelve months, increasing to 500 million yen annually by the third year. 2006 FastenerNews.com
