The U.S. Fastener Quality Act, or Public Law 101-592, as amended in 1999, was implemented on December 6, 1999.
Fasteners covered under the amended law are limited to bolts, nuts screws and studs (having a nominal diameter of 6 millimeters/0.25 inch or greater), or direct tension-indicating washers that are manufactured to standards and specifications of consensus standards organizations or government agencies that require a grade mark and meet the minimum specified tensile strength criterion.
Exempted: Fasteners that are part of an assembly; are ordered for use as a spare, substitute, service or replacement part, unless that part is in a package containing more than 75; fasteners produced and marked as ASTM A 307 Grade A; fasteners produced according to ASTM F432; fasteners manufactured specifically for aircraft and approved by FAA or foreign airworthiness authority; and fasteners manufactured to a proprietary standard.
