NAM Forms Coalition for the Future of Manufacturing
Jason Sandefur
Facing what it calls the weakest manufacturing recovery in almost a century, the National Association of Manufacturers has formed a new alliance called the Coalition for the Future of Manufacturing. The coalitions goal is to push for immediate enactment of public policies that reduce the cost of doing business in this country, level the international playing field, and promote innovation and investment, according to NAM vice president Stephen Gold. According to NAM.org, the coalitions agenda emphasizes tax and trade policy, a national energy policy, asbestos litigation reform, a technology policy and worker skills.
NAM president Jerry Jasinowski noted in a Sept. 5 press release that 44,000 more manufacturing jobs were lost in August, which represents a loss of manufacturing jobs for 37 consecutive months. Since July 2000, weve lost 2,729,000 manufacturing jobs almost 16 percent of all manufacturing jobs a larger decline than in any of the previous five recessions, he stated.
Coalition membership is free and the group is open to associations, manufacturers, non-profit advocacy groups and universities. NAM headquarters in Washington, DC, will serve as campaign central for the coalition. For information contact Gold at 1331 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC, 20004.
