Greenslade: Prevention Key to Shipping Zero-Defect Parts
Jason Sandefur
Customer demand for zero-defect parts has become a huge problem for the industry, according to fastener veteran Joe Greenslade of Ft. Worth, TX-based Greenslade and Co. To achieve zero defects, manufacturers must rely on prevention using computer modeling, statistical analysis and equipment process controls. Relying on detection is a recipe for failure, Greenslade stated. Consistent raw material from a single vendor is also important, along with a variety of sorting methods, ranging from rollers to more sophisticated laser, vision or sonic technology. An understanding of part requirements and machine capability is critical to developing a thorough plan. Greenslade acknowledged its unlikely any manufacturer is shipping zero-defect parts in production quantities. Its impossible to run a factory, day to day, 24/7, flawlessly. 2003 FastenerNews.com
