2014 FIN – MEDIA SPOTLIGHT – The Sandusky Register featured local fastener manufacturer Industrial Nut Corp. as part of the Erie County Chamber of Commerce’s “Breakfast of Champions” series about companies in the Ohio community.

Industrial Nut was founded in 1908 and has grown to a company anticipating $17 million in sales in 2014, CEO J. William Springer told the chamber.
“My dad (Jack B.) married into the family and became president of Industrial Nut,” Sandusky Register reporter Melissa Topey quoted Springer. “I am third generation. I am fortunate to have three of my sons working with me; they are the fourth generation.”

Springer is the grandson of William Senn, who with Frank Brightman, a machinist-inventor, and George Zimmerman, started Brightman Hammered Nut & Manufacturing Company.
In 1937 the company became a family partnership of Senn, his wife and their children, Frank Senn and Springer’s mother – Lelia Senn Springer.

During World War II, then Brightman Nut Co. operated seven days a week with 150 women and 100 men plus 65 German war prisoners transported to the plant from where they were being held at Erie Proving Grounds.

Springer was the 1998-1999 chairman of the Industrial Fasteners Institute.
Today Industrial Nut’s major markets are heavy trucks, construction equipment and farm equipment.
Springer credited continually investing in technology and upgrading equipment for the company’s survival. At one point the company’s plane was sold to fund investments, he noted.
Springer also emphasized having “talented and intelligent” employees. “People are the most important asset.”
And he stressed the importance of integrity in dealing with customers.

Industrial Nut’s Future
Fourth generation Springers now working at Industrial Nut are John, Jim and David. Fourth son Jack is still in school.
“These men have no plans to rest on the family name,” the Sandusky Register quoted Bill Springer said. “We do want to grow our business and operate here in Sandusky.”
David Springer said Industrial Nut “will continue to invest in new technologies where it makes sense- understanding the market, what’s driving it and matching that up to our strengths.”
Springer strategies include a leaner, more flexible and responsive manufacturing capability; a strong supply chain; lower manufacturing costs and increased production; expanding globally; customer satisfaction; and a trained, motivated and productive work force.
