ASTM Honors DeCosta

John Wolz

Nonferrous fastener expert Joseph DeCosta will be honored with the 2002 ASTM Award of Merit and title of Fellow, the highest ASTM International recognition for standards contributions by an individual.
DeCosta, executive vice president of Robbins Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Fall River, MA, is a member of the ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners, is chair of the F16.04 subcommittee on stainless steel and nonferrous fasteners, and is a member of the executive and other subcommittees. He also is a member of the ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel & Related Alloys. He has been an ASTM member since 1992.
The F16 Committee cited DeCostas exceptional contributions in the standardization of fasteners through his leadership of F16.04, and his dedicated participation, technical expertise and valued contributions in furthering the objectives of Committee F16 nationally and internationally.
Instrumental in the development and revision of a number of fastener standards, DeCostas expertise has helped ASTM standards continue to be the premier global standards source for the fastener industry. He brings his technical knowledge in support of the North American delegation to the International Organization for Standardization, notably his recent work on a fastener specification.
DeCosta has worked his entire career in the manufacturing of stainless steel and nonferrous fasteners for the marine, chemical and petrochemical industries as well as the Department of Defense. He has advised government and industry on fastener quality issues and fastener corrosion, and he has worked in conjunction with test equipment manufacturers and test labs to develop methods that reflect accurately the mechanical properties of stainless steel and nonferrous fasteners.
ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners is one of 130 ASTM technical standards-writing committees. Founded in 1898, ASTM International develops voluntary standards for materials, products, systems and services and has more than 30,000 members around the globe representing industry, government, academia and consumers.
