Some of General Motors’ 25,000 manufacturing robots are taking a rest from their daily welding, fastening, and painting to pack and handle holiday gifts, GM Authority reports.
“GM got its start in the robotics industry in 1961, with ‘Father of Robotics’ Joseph Engelberger when it implemented the first industrial robot used in a GM production plant,” writes Alex Luft.
“The automaker also played a critical role in maturing the automotive manufacturing robotics industry with the 1982 establishment of GMFanuc joint venture. Today FANUC (as it’s called) is one of the largest producers of industrial robots in the world.”
GM purchases and implements about 3,000 robots around the world each year, according to GM Authority.
Robotics in manufacturing has spread to other industries. As FIN reported in August, the future of robotic assembly has already arrived at Boeing.
“Boeing’s wide-body commercial jets are now riveted automatically by giant machines that move rapidly and precisely over the skin of the planes,” wrote John Markoff of the New York Times. “Even with these machines, the company said it struggles to find enough workers to make its new 787 aircraft. Rather, the machines offer significant increases in precision and are safer for workers.”
