2013 FIN – Westby Sells Wisconsin Distributorship to Schmitting
January 30, 2013 FIN – Don Westby sold his Wisconsin fastener distributorship to Dave Schmitting.
Westby hired Schmitting as general manager of Westby Production Components Inc. in 2008 and within six months, Westby retired from day-to-day operations.
Westby, the 2002-03 president of the National Fastener Distributors Association, started his career as an industrial engineer at Elco in 1968. He next was a salesperson for Hoyt Fastener with Wisconsin as his prime sales territory. He founded Westby Products in 1987 in 1987 in a small rented warehouse space in Grafton, WI.
Within a few years Westby purchased a warehouse in Port Washington, WI, and a 1999 addition doubled the square footage.
In subsequent years, the distributorship continued to grow its customer base, increase sales, improve warehouse processes and efficiencies and upgrade computer systems.
Today Westby Inc. provides inventory management programs, bin stocking and operates “with a key focus of customer service,” Westby told FIN.
When he joined Westby, Schmitting had more than 30 years of fastener experience, including working for Endries International and Gateway Screw.
Westby said Schmitting shares his “philosophy of customer service and prompt attention to customer needs and concerns.” With four years as general manager, customers and vendors are assured “they will continue their business relationships with the same pledge of service and support as they have had over the past 25 years.”
