2010 FIN – SEFA Marks 35th Anniversary
March 17, 2010 FIN – The Southeastern Fastener Association marked its 35th anniversary of its founding in Atlanta as The Fastener Association.
SEFA celebrated the anniversary with a slide show and introducing nine former presidents who served a total of 11 terms during its “Past Presidents Reception” at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, FL.
Former presidents attending were: 1984/85, Robbie Gilchrest, Capital Marketing; 1992/93, Rene Fernandez, Webb Bolt; 1993/94, Mickey Matheny, Northstar Sales & Marketing; 1999/2000, Mark Klosek, Vertex Distribution;
2000/01, Bill McIntyre; 2001/03, Brian Crouch, Fastener Associates; 2003/04, Mike Hart, Brighton Best; 2006/08 Daniel Stephens, Edsco Fasteners; and 2008/09, Glenn Goins, Southern Fasteners.
The 2010/11 president, Joanne Bialas of International Fastener, reviewed highlights of SEFA’s history, including the name change in 1988 from The Fastener Association to Southeastern Fastener Association.
• SEFA awarded its first scholarships in 1989. Since then 130+ scholarships have been awarded.
Tony Adams has been scholarship chair since 2002.
• In 1990 Ed Ambrose joined the board and continued for 20 years.
• In 1991 Em Webb became the first woman president.
• In 1997 SEFA participated in a joint meeting in New Orleans with the Southwestern Fastener Association and National Fastener Distributors Association.
• In 2001 SEFA held a joint meeting with SFA in Biloxi, MS.
• SEFA launched its website – thesefa.com – in 2001 with the help of Hal Jones of Peco Fasteners.
• After 12 years assisting the original executive director – Rebecca Williams – Kathy Adams succeeded her.
• During 2002 the board decided to eliminate the annual fall “city” meeting and hold just the spring “resort” conference.
• Brian Crouch became the first two-term president – serving from 2001 to 2003.
• In 2007 SEFA sponsored a golf tournament in conjunction with the National Industrial Fastener Show/East held in Atlanta.
• In 2008 Daniel Edwards became the second president to serve two terms. He has since served as treasurer.
• In 2009 Kathy Adams stepped down as executive director and due to the economy the board closed the SEFA office in Atlanta.
