1988 FIN – Medalist & Lewis Screw Form Joint Venture
August 31, 1988 FIN – Medalist Industries, Inc., Mequon (Milwaukee), Wisconsin, has entered into a joint venture agreement with Lewis Screw Co., Chicago, Illinois, a subsidiary of Dallas-based Columbia General Corp. which would combine the fastener operations of the two companies.
The new entity, to be called Medalist Fasteners, Inc., would be 80% owned by Medalist and 20% owned by Columbia General. Medalist Fasteners, Inc., will include Lewis Screw, Champion Screw, Redi-Bolt, Bolt Master, Taylor Chain, and A-Model Threaded Rod.
Medalist Industries (1987 sales: $147 million) is the parent company of: Champion Screw Co., Chicago, Illinois (thread rolling screws, sems, sheet metal screws, hex head cap screws, carriage bolts, Taptite, Plastite, Torx Drive Systems, and a variety of nuts and washers); Redi-Bolt Div., East Chicago, Indiana (threaded rod, angles, flats, hex nuts, bolts, galvanized steel and aluminum sheets); and Rein Leitzke Div., Hustisford, Wisconsin (clevis pins, hitch pins, safety pins, machinery keys, trailer hitch balls, machinery bushings, hex socket set screws and hex socket wrenches).
Medalist is, as we’ve reported in recent issues of FIN, currently the target of a take over bid by Riverway Securities, A Houston-based investment partnership controlled by John Howenstein and Josephine Abercrombie.
Besides fasteners, Medalist’s products include a clothing line, sporting goods (including bicycles), marine engines, generators and woodworking and metal-cutting equipment.
Lewis Screw Co., produces Sems, machine, thread formings, self-tapping, hex head, and socket head screws. The company also produces Taptite and Plastite screws and Torx drive systems.
