1987 FIN – Vulcan Opens New Facility
February 12, 1987 FIN – Vulcan Threaded Products, Inc., Pelham, Alabama has recently moved to a larger, updated facility just outside of Birmingham. This completes a goal set three years ago.
Bill Upton, president, tells FIN that “it was our goal to offer fastener distributors of all sizes a quality product, same ay turn around, and complete special order capabilities.”
The goal was conceived by Upton and Bill Jenkins, vie president of sales, who both realized that the company was outgrowing its plant and company name.
Vulcan Threaded Rod, founded by David and Bill Upton (David is Bill’s father) and Jenkins, began producing threaded rod in 1976.
By 1984 the company had added to its product line fully threaded studs, anchor bolts, sag rods, double end studs, and special anchor bolt assemblies. To indicate these additional lines, the company name was changed to Vulcan Threaded Products, Inc. in 1984.
By mid-1985 the decision was made to design and build a new facility with streamlined manufacturing operations. Upton tells FIN that the operations can now draw, straighten, cut, thread, and package finished products ready for shipping. Pieces are handled once instead of three or four times. The plant also has expanded its production of stainless products, anchor bolts, and coupling buts. All products are marketed to bolt and screw distributors.
Besides Upton and Jenkins as principals, Tom Sherrill is vice president of operations. ©1987/2010 Fastener Industry News
