1983 FIN – Grabner Acquires Cardinal
FASTENER HISTORY
October 6, 1983 FIN – Cardinal Fastener & Specialty Co. Inc, is the new name for the former Cardinal Threading Division, Bedford Heights, Ohio.
The assets were recently purchased by John W. Grabner, former executive vice president of Cardinal American Corporation and general manager of Cardinal Threading.
The new company has kept most of the sales team from Cardinal Threading and added some new people as well. Pam Lamp and Stacy Holt will handle inside sales as before and the sales agencies of Burr & Moynihan; Casey Products; Clay Threeton; Craig Kennedy and Sid Campbell will continue the outside sales support teams. Chuck Reid, former supervisor of inside sales, has rejoined Cardinal to cover Cleveland and the central region and Ed Bartsch will continue to handle national accounts. Added as sales consultants will be M.A. (Tommy) Thompson and Ralph Patterson formerly with the Industrial Fastener Division of Bethlehem Steel. The plant management will remain under John D. Oniga, newly appointed vice president of manufacturing.
Cardinal Fastener will act as a stocking manufacturer of alloy and medium carbon steels’; hot heading up to 3″ diameter, threading up to 6″ diameter, fasteners as well as non-fastener products. Rummaging through FIN’s archives we managed to find enough material to provide you with a bit of background on the company.
The story begins about 30 years ago when Darwin Noll founded Production Experts, a company that specialized in rebuilding steel mill equipment. To supply large bolts that he had trouble obtaining when he needed them, Noll set up Cardinal Threading, first as a captive supplier and later as a supplier to outside customers.
The parent company expanded over the years and became Cardinal American made up of three subsidiaries: Production Experts; National Metal Abrasives (steel shot and grit); and Butler Manufacturing (truck and trailer parts) and three divisions: Cardinal Home Products (patio furniture and fireplace inserts); Noll transportations (a common carrier); and Cardinal Threading.
Grabner joined Cardinal Threading in July 1980 and before that he was with Arthur Young for three years and was president of Wendy’s of Virginia.
As executive vice president of Cardinal American, we believe his managerial responsibilities included Cardinal Threading, Butler Manufacturing, National Metal Abrasives, and Noll Transportation.
The fastener industry is not too strange a choice for Grabner; his father is chairman of Lawson & Sessions. ©1983/2009 Fastener Industry News
